Not a runner but last year there was some guy who could have been a top 15 pick in the NFL draft. He decided to do his love for baseball instead. He got drafted 5th round then was cut. That's a waste of talent.

GOOD TOPIC BUT I DONT THINK MOST PEOPLE HERE KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT ELITE RUNNING ETC TO ANSWER THAT

HM BUT LETS SEE.. OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD I WOULD GO WITH:

    GRANVILLE
    TROTTER
    SIRAKI
    SAGE
MAGNESS/DANIELSON MAYBE (BASED ON POST HS)?

AND CANT FORGET LEAL... THAT WOULD DEFINITELY BE ONE OF THE TOP CHOICES

    ILL THINK OF MORE LATER.

    Good post.

I definitely agree with Leal, that is a classic one. I actually think I saw him last year at a meet in the NCS (his sister graduated last year but she ran cross country); I think he still visits the team and goes to some meets etc. He was a legend in the NCS, too bad.. Sad

I don't think Magness (or Danielson?) improved after high school did they?

I would also probably put Moore, since Granville is there.

And I agree with Trotter/Siraki as well (especially considering where Bei/Hall is now). Maybe put Mortensen in there too. I'm not as sure about Stamps, maybe that too?

Magness was definitely more a case of a decently talented runner running to his absolute potential in high school and then having nowhere to go but down, rather than a squandering of talent.

Sure, he might have eaked out another second or two if he could have listened to his college coach, but he pretty much ran his best in High school, and no matter what system he tried, that was pretty much it for him.

Pity what happened to him. He was running a ton of mileage in high school, and that's the problem.. not much room to improve if you're already at 100 mpw in high school (there might be some exceptions to this). I think the same thing happened with Nelson and a lot of the guys back in the 70s-80s when mileage was stressed.
